BT7 Ashtray Mounting Help

Howdy all!

My BT7 came without an ashtray, and I'd like to add one (not that I smoke). I see that Moss has ashtrays, but not any of the mounting hardware. However, the hardware from the exploded view in the Moss catalog seems easy enough to fabricate. Where I need help is what is done with the carpet around the ashtray. The carpet on my transmission tunnel has no cut-out of any kind for the ashtray.

Wisdom from the collective is most appreciated!

I just very carefully cut mine out around the opening, being careful to leave a little more around the edges to make sure that I didn't have any space between the edge of the ashtray and the carpet. I don't know what else could be done??

B: I just installed one in my BT-7 and I think it came out pretty well. Here's what did:
1) I repositioned some of the snaps that hold my carpet down over the transmission tunnel. I made the carpet look just a bit snugger, a cleaner look. This is an optional step, but I didn't want to make a permanent cut in the carpet if I wasn't satisfied with the overall carpet position.

2) I then located the indentation for the ashtray and carefully made an "X" cut over the hole, close but not all the way to the edge. An Xacto knife did the trick.

3) Remove the little inner ashtray. On the bottom of the larger outer ashtray you'll see 2 inset screw holes. At least that's what the one Moss sent me had. I pushed the ashtray down in the X-cut and stuck a thin nail into a screw hole to figure out how long the screws needed to be to span the gap and bought 2 at a local Ace hardware. Remove the ashtray and drill the two screw holes as needed. Tip: remove the carpet when you drill the 2 small holes in the trans tunnel. I tried to carefully hold the cut carpet opening back when I drilled and still managed to snag a carpet thread on the drill bit. It turned out OK, but...

4) Replace the carpet, fold the X-cut carpet into the hole and push the ashtray into the hole (the ability to do so may depend on the thickness of your carpet). Screw the ashtray down and it's rock solid. No need to buy or locate any mounting hardware IMO. The lip of the ashtray covers the carpet nicely, looks great to me. Good luck.

Gents:

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it! Looks like I've got a project for the weekend!
