Broken Exhaust Stud Removal

Any one have any tricks on getting a broken stud out.Putting my 1275 sprite engine back together and I broke a stud and we are so close on going VROOM.
I had to just walk away and close up the shop for the night and figure how to get out of this mess.

Think I will have another cold one.

Cheers

How bad is the break? Is it possible to use a backout to get it out?

Heat and penetrating oil. Do you have access to a "blue wrench"?

anything protruding?

If little or no stud is above the surface to grab onto, take the manifold off and drive it down to the muffler shop. They will burn it out in nothing flat. If there is something to grab onto, soat it in pb Blaster, and use as much heat as you might have, like a propane or a MAT (?) gas. Remember don't just try to loosen. Tighten first, then loosen, repeat many times in small steps until it comes out. I used a mama size channel locks.
I removed 3 studs from my 1275 manifold this way recently. First time IN MY LIFE I have every successfully removed and replaced the studs on an exhaust manifold. Good luck

There is just about 1/8 sticking out of the head it is not rusted in there as I was screwing the stud into the head. Going to check out some good easy out tools today even a welder to weld a flat washer and nut to the stud.

Cheers

Mark, If you've got thread, I have a set of extractor nuts. I can run then in - or I'm near Milton on Sunday. If it isn't tight, can you not get vice grips on it?

Doh :wall: of course you don't need thread for extractor nuts - that's what they are for.

Just went thru this on a friend's MGB. I used a sprag tool. Not sure you'd get enough grab on 1/8" but they're great tools to have around: HERE.

We got it out. Drilled up the center and extracted it out. Should be running by tonight

Good enough, nice work. Now we want to hear that it is up and running.
