Brighter dash light bulb saga continues

I am getting ready to cover all bases on this one. I just ordered 8 watt 12 volt bulbs in case the LED's and 3.5 watt units don't work as well as I expect. This is what the 8 watt bulb look like in the socket, so it should fit down in the (4) smaller gauges no problemo!

As of Sunday, the picture of the 8 watt bulb in the holder should be here as an attachment.

Hey Paul,

I'm telling you adding more Ws is not
is problem witht he Smith gauges.

The problem is primarily loss of reflectivity
over time. The inside surfaces of the gauges get
dull from dust, soot, and plain old age yellowing.

A good cleaning inside and new highly reflective
inside coating works wonders.

And remember, these gauges are back-lit. They will
never intended to glow in your face like today's gauges.

Sun is up, I'm heading down to the Crypt for another
attempt to remove the distributor.....before Wendy
wakes up. She's some kinda ticked off after Mike Masters
and I spent a solid week on wiring issues, the car
final starts only to die again within 48 hours. And
now I's deader than dirt.

This makes sense. You may just have a lot more light creating an already fuzzy image fuzzier. Mine look great during the day but at night it's real hard to make out anything on the small gauges due to faded colors and in my case a lot of dust being magnified by the light.

Well, It's 38 degrees and beautiful outside. I believe it's time to perform the ritual and get the 3 started and warmed up for todays drive. Hmmm... Where did that photo through my windshield thread go. Paul, good luck with the lights!

I was pondering a bit here Paul.

You live on the island of Rhode while I live on the
Island of Puerto Rico. We are both heading into the
winter season. BUURRR! For me, that means I will have
to wear socks in my Docksiders.

For you that means........God I hate to even think about it.

So, if yer ever sitting out a 4 foot snow storm, feeling
kinda down in the dumps about yer dim gauges, I suppose
I could free up some time and a frequent flier ticket
for you to arrive to a warmer island and learn from a
master refurbisher how to brighten your evening cockpit.

Of course that lesson would be followed by a few days of cursing and toiling over the Crypt Car and it's many terminal ailments.

As I said in the other post, if my golf game doesn't improve soon.............

I guess that I will just have to take all of the gauges apart and clean them, which is what I had planned for the winter anyhow. I just wanted to assemble all of the parts that I will need ahead of time.

Did you take any pics of that project? It would be nice to see what you did with yours.

Paul,
When Nissonger overhauled my speedo last year, that did a total refurbish. One of the things they did was to clean and polish the inside of the coloured domes that house the little light bulbs. This caused my light on the speedo to really brighten up. This also promted me to do the same to my other gauges, that is, simply clean and polish them up, especially the bulb housings.

Big difference.

Bill

OK Bill. That sounds simple enough.

Let me try that bulb pic again.

Paul: How about a swap?

You bring all your gauges and a timing gun to PR.
I'll supply the flight ticket R/T.

I will rehab your gauges good as new and all you have
to do to return this kindeness is set the timing on the
Crypt Car, change out the clutch, thrust washers and main
bearings.

This offer might look pretty good to you come Jan or Feb!!
When I'm sitting on sandy beaches watching bikini babes frolic in the surf, and you are up in cold-ass Nanookland
looking at what MIGHT be babes under mountains of heavy clothes as they trudge along in snow boots to the shopping
center.

Yeah, it;s a rough life I live here in the tropics.
But oh, how much I miss inner city Washington DC.
The friendly people, smiling faces, the honesty and sincerity of everyone.

easy day of designing for me today-no meetings.

Such a deal I have for you, my friend!

Let me think about that one for awhile.

How could you say no to that! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I'd have to think real hard for a reason not too if my part of Colorado didn't have such mild winters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dale,

If it weren't for wifey divorce papers to be served when getting back, 2 kids, big mortgage, college loan, car loans, and work to pay for it all... Oh yeah and the part about my 3 probably being sold when I got back (3 needs protection too from jealous wife) I would go. If you asked me about 22 years ago though I would have been there yesterday.

Gonna be snowing soon Paul. Golf Course closed, car gonna be on stands, little to do.

My thinking is done. Divorce is eminent, sale of TR6 will preclude divorce proceeding and quite possibly be completed prior to my return. All spare parts accumulated over past 10 months will go with TR6 sale. Good chance that 40 years of tool collection will be gone as well. Not much of a shot that any of my golf clubs will be here either. Along with any clothes not on my back when I leave.

I don't believe that I'll be bringing Dale's proposal up again for a long time.

Paul, what if the wife went with you. She could lounge on the beach while you play with cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Shawn,

While being my biggest supporter for having fun with the car, she has reached the saturation point with the Triumph over the summer. With all of the work done, club events, ya-da, ya-da, it's time to back off for a while. The hobby was sleeping for a long time and we both got very active again this year, so rather than ruin next years potential upgrades and improvements, I'm just stepping away from the car, sir, slowly.....very.........slowly stepping away. But just for now..

Bonus day today. New motor mounts arrive along with 12 new 8W bulbs for this project. Also, the 2 new B/L emblems for the front fenders that I thought got lost in shipping came too. These are the rare ones that are the correct color blue and match what is on the car.

All of the winter projects are slowing coming together. Still a few back-orders, but better to have parts trickle in. Bonus day because no complaints from the bride who got the TRF and other boxes while I was out working.

I still can't push the trip down Dale. Sorry!
