I had a rear brake cylinder failure on my driver Midget and on tear down realized I had fitted rear shoes that I rebuilt with old stock Ferodo linings. This is the best stopping Spridget I have of currently four.:rolleye: I've been attributing the excellent braking to the PO's front pads that appear to be just generic but am now putting at least some of the ability on the rear shoes. The lining was rivet on Ferodo VG95 I believe. Anyway, it has got me thinking about what was considered the best you could get back when our cars were current. I realize not everyone wanted the same thing. I had a set of Mintex front pad's on another car that wore very well and didn't seem to fade but required plenty of pedal pressure to stop. I think that Mintex was considered top of the line back then as well.

Anyone remember?? I'll be looking for NOS!:D

Apparently no one remembers what the hot setup was "in the day". I'm afraid I've taken the attitude that what was being offered back then was far superior to anything one can get today. That may be wrong and I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with the Hawk metallic front pads. Just how aggressive are they and will they destroy my rotors. I've tried "green stuff" and am not impressed. Generic or some old, I believe, DS11 pads I have may be next if the Hawk pads are too rough on rotors.

Not an expert by any means but, seems to me brake technology has advanced quite a lot since NOS - and more to the point NOS will have asbestos.
 
JP,I understand the caution on asbestos but I've been around asbestos brake dust all my life and it hasn't killed me yet. Now days I'm very careful with dust though and kinda think that asbestos may have been superior....

Ferodo is still in business but don't seem to find anything for our old cars now.
