Alfa developed a leaky caliper, port side front. Fluid comin' from around the inside piston. Found it Thursday AM on my preflight... FOOEY.
My fave local supplier could only locate ONE kit. Had it that afternoon, all of $13. I didn't get to it 'til this AM and what a MESS it had made of all the stuff under there. Brake fluid all over everything. First thought was to rebuild a spare one and just exchange 'em... sorta my own rebuilding service. Could NOT get the pistons out of the benched 'spare' caliper. Finally just yanked the leaker off the car and wrestled it around on th' concrete until I had it all cleaned and refurbed. Went to put it back up and all was going well... until it came to the point of reconnecting a short little steel supply line.
Li'l bugger would NOT start in the threads. Fluid everywhere ~again~ :madder:
I don't like to pinch flex hoses and thought I'd be quick enuff to not lose much fluid but THIS thing had other ideas. It seemed to start once but felt too "tight" and I don't cross-thread. Finally in exasperation I clamped the hose, re-removed the caliper, detached the steel shorty line from the spindle and flexy... caliper on the deck and the durn'd fitting went RIGHT IN!!! HUH?!?
Fettled it all back together and had the lovely Horsemits push the pedal a few times to purge the air. At least it don't leak now and I can stop reliably. Time spent messin' with that stoopid ferrule was almost as much as the caliper clean & reseal.
Can't WAIT 'til I have to do the OTHER side. :smirk:
...did I mention the +90°F noon sun and a thunderstorm scheduled for 1600 hours? I did beat the rain. By ten minutes.
