brake servo change out

I bought a servo off ebay that is supposed to be good so I am wanting to change mine out and see. I can hopefully get mine rebuilt if this other unit is bad. I want to just unbolt the MC from the booster but the Bentley book says to "disconnect the two brake pipes from the master cylinder". Is this really necessary? Also, there is a little filter inside the boot of the pedal connector that has decomposed. Do I need this filter? ...and what is it filtering?

I know you can loosen the 2 bolts securing the MC to the servo and carefully pull the MC forward off the studs, I have done it to adjust the little round headed pin in the front of the servo but I dont know if you can work the servo out, give it a try dont bend the brake lines too much
