Brake Rotors - normal vs "slotted"

Well, my Rear IRS is just about complete and for the brake rotors I bought and installed some after-market "Drilled/Slotted? rotors for my XKE. However, for the fronts I think I am going to stick with the original style. For one thing, after reading up on the subject I have determined ( I think) that the added benefit versus increased cost just isn't worth it (The slotted rotors are more than double the cost of the regular rotors).

Also, can someone tell me if the drilled/slotted rotors can be "turned" if needed, or do you just have to buy new rotors? I would guess that turning these rotors could not easily be done, but I don't know that for a fact. I'd like to hear some other opinions on the topic of drilled/slotted rotors?

Drilled rotors can be cut down, just like regular ones, but the holes need to be de-burred after cutting (otherwise, you'll have a sharp edge around the hole due to material removal). I dunno what you would do to de-burr slotted rotors after machining (I guess you'd have to do them by hand, unless you had some fancy machine shop equipment).
I think they look good (my bike has drilled rotors), but I'm not sure about peformance. For what it's worth, our club specifically prohibits drilled rotors on time trials (street) cars unless they came stock. This decision was based on some catastophic failures of rotors at Lime Rock last year.

If you want the even braking get the drilled in the front too! Or your going to get brake fade in the front and the rear end could possibly swing round. Safety.Safety, always buy in sets and do them all. Won't pass tech on a lot of meets.

I'm actually starting to think about selling the rear slotted rotors and putting regular rotors all around.

You'll actually be beter off. The XKE had pretty exceptional braking. If you were to do competition driving on a regular basis slotted would be the best. You might want to convert to he XJS vented rotors and calipers, helps run the brakes cooler and I never had brake fade in the S.
XKS Unlimited can help with the conversion, might also use just a tade wider tire and wheel, like Eagle does on their models.

And one down side of slotted rotors that I noticed on my Elan is that they make a pretty loud swishing noise under any braking.. And I don't have a radio!

I have nothing but praise for the way the car stops though...

I put drilled and slotted rotors on the front of my 92 XJS V12 coupe and love them, great stopping power. I got them from Classic Jag in Tx, very reasonable price, rapid shipment.
