TR2/3/3A brake reservoir cap leak???

I'm getting brake fluid coming out around the cap and gathering around the rim of the brake reservoir. Not sure if it's coming out of the cap vent hole or around the rim of the cap, but after every drive I have to wipe it up to keep it off the paint. Would pressure in the system push fluid out the vent cap? I have a rubber seal on the inside of the lid,so I really don't think it's coming from there. Clutch and brakes work fine. I have left the fluid level a little lower but still get the fluid around the top of the can. Any ideas or suggestions. Thanks

I used one of those accordion rubber seals available on the parts houses "Help" racks for just hat reason. The seal bellows flexes to allow expansion and contraction of the fluid without allowing any to exit the vent hole. With the stock cap fluid will always slosh out.

Me too. Here's the one I used...

Interesting. Never seen one of those before. Is this for Girling MC? Would similar, or same, seal fit/work with Lockheed MC? Cheers, Mike

I am not sure. The Girling cap is about twice as large as the Lockheed cap. The smaller bellows seal may be available, but I have not seen any that small. By it's design, the larger seal could not be cut down that far to fit. Myabe somebody has seen a small seal...?

I'm guessing it's a Girling since the Lockeed doesn't have a "rim" around the reservoir exterior. The caps is designed to breathe. The Girling unit has two "reservoirs". The smaller diameter one as seen when the cap is off if for the clutch slave, the main one for the braking system. The trick is you only fill the reservoir the the level of the clutch slave. That way if the small reservoir level drops, you know you have a leak in the clutch slave; If the large reservoir (only) drops, there is a brake system leak. By filling the unit all the way up, 1: You will have back pressure blowing fluid out the breather and 2: You have no way of knowing there is a leak until you have lost 2 -3 oz of fluid from the reservoir. (3 oz. is a lot!!!)

Thanks for the tip Frank. I am losing fluid, but have no idea where. I will implement your plan tomorrow and I should have my answer.

Thanks, dick
