Brake pipe nut size?

Morning all,
The metal brake pipe end, and the nut directly below it, is 9/16. What size it the nut that is inside the braket?
I don't have any size spanner that fits it.
I got lucky with the first pipe, just banged it out, but this requires actual wrenching....

By the looks of the hose, Barry, I'd say "Vise Grips" would be appropriate in this case! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Everything south of the pedal is being replaced with new Jeff; this nut and then the pipes if I can get at 'em, are the last things to remove....
My vice grips don't get a good enough grip, I'll wait for the gallon of PB to disipate and try again.
It has to be metric right, because the caliper bolts were 16mm?

Barry, the caliper bolt heads are 5/8". .625" vs .630" for 16mm. They shouldn't be metric at all.
Try holding on to the steel sleeve at the end of the hose, or just take the death wheel and cut it off.
Jeff

I found them to be metric when I change the lines to the clutch cylinder. I can't remember the size. Drove me nuts until I took the new line to the tool box and started trying wrenches.

Done.
I love that thing.
The new calipers I've got from O'Reillys have the same bolts, 5/8 too big, 9/16 too small, 16mm is spot on. There maybe a crazy SAE size in there somewhere, 19/32?

Uh, Barry, 16mm is bigger than 5/8". /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Are you talking about the bolts that hold the caliper halves together? They may be metric. The bolts that hold the calipers to the mounts should take a 5/8" socket.
Jeff

I married a math teacher so I wouldn't have to think about those details Jeff! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Yeah, 16mm of the caliper halves (16mm worked on the mounts too), but I did them by feel because I couldn't see them directly.
The bottom nuts for the pipe are somewhere between 9/16 and 5/8. Sorry, were somewhere between. The new pipes have the same size nut too, just a hair wider than 9/16.
Clearly I'll have to get some metric wrenches anyway because I won't be able to put the new pipes on with a death wheel. I'll let you know.

Yeah, we're starting to see some funky hardware deviations.

David, I have a couple of 19/32" wrenches. Ford used to have oddball fasteners in places, and I think these were probably for my Grandfather's Model A.
Jeff

The flats on the flex line started life as 3/8" BS. Some replacement hoses are still British Standard and some come with 9/16" (actual) flats.

I found that metric worked better when I replaced these. Must be an after market thing.
