How in the world do you take a BMC apart for a 71 Midget? I think it is the OEM unit & not a different year. I have several '69 sprite, '72 Midget & '71 Midget but am pretty sure this one came off the '71 (paint Oversrpay).
I have it all apart but cannot remove the piston. Can these be rebuilt?

Did you get that last snap ring that is about 2 1/2" deep in there, UNDER the delrin (white plastic) ring?
Bill

Ahh. That is what I thought but cannot get under the delrin. Does it come in the rebuild kit. If so I'll just trash it to get down in there. How do you get down in there?

That white plastic piece is a nightmare. Try the 2 screw method. I rill it and screw 2 screws into the plastic then use the screws and a hammer to pull it out.
When that doesn't work, a torch will melt it out for sure.
Then pick out the clip 8 miles down the bore and the guts fall right out.

Engineers are my friend!

Don't know if the Delrin ring comes with the rebuilt kit but to make sure I saved it. I drilled 3 holes & tapped with a 4-40. I inserted 3 4-40 x 2" aluminum studs in each hole. I then gripped all 3 in a vise and pulled on the MC. Ring came right out. Then there was another ring that came out with compressed air. The lower C clip came out without a hiccup and out came the works. The lower worked were a bit tight in there but a little compressed air and it shot right out. Not sure If I will rebuild it but wanted to take it apart to learn about it.

I honed mine with some 600 grit paper on a split wooden stick and a drill motor and it hasn't leaked for 5 years now, it's an easy fix.
