Brake Master Cylinder

So the next chapter of making the Healey stop...

I just received a new brake master cylinder from Moss. Wanted to just do a rebuild, but the kits were not immediately available, so I settled for a new one. I figured I would just go with the bolt-on job. But......

The new master cylinder is shorter than the original on the car. I have a 67 BJ8 with servo. The original master cylinder measures about 4 3/4" from the firewall to the front end of the cylinder. The new one only measures 4 1/8". The new one is made from cast iron and the original is a light composite metal with Girling stamped under the pressure line. So besides the feed line from the reservoir being short by almost 3/4", I wonder if the stroke is also different and the volume of fluid with each stroke.

Anyone have any ideas????? Is this the new style of replacements?

Hi Mark, it sounds like someone was previously messin with your car and installed the wrong MC. Length wise [ 4 1/8" ] is about correct when measured from the mounting face of the MC to its end.---Keoke
 
Thanks Keoke. So the clutch and brake MCs are pretty much the same length? Looking at the parts manual, it appeared that the non-servo MC was longer. I wondered about that. It seems that the MC was removed once because the flare nut was buggered up. I will just need to stretch the reservoir line a little to make it work. I think turning the reservoir a quarter turn will give me the slack I need. I was beginning to wonder what to do with the extra time I was going to have tomorrow!

Hi Mark,
I had this same problem with my BJ8 a few years ago, both Moss and Victoria British supplied me with the same M/C, which was shorter than the one installed on my car originally. I know that the M/C on the car is original since I have owned the car since '74 and bought it from its original owner. So, no, you are not crazy or have a monkeyed-with car, others have had the same M/C issue. Anyway, I ended up returning both M/Cs and using a rebuild kit instead, since I would otherwise have to replace two brake lines which did not line up with the replacement M/C. In the future, I think I will just go ahead and replace the lines that need to be otherwise "stretched".
