Brake Master Cylinder rebuild or replace?

I experienced a problem with my brakes and its pointing to replacing the MC. I noticed that there was quit a bit of thickish fluid in the reservour. Is it recommended to buy new or do a rebuild? If its possible that a rebuild will fix the problem, how difficult is it and any possible got-ya's would be much appreciated.

I lost my brakes this morning and after pumping I was able to drive to work though somewhat dodgy. I parked the car and checked the fluid. It was fine ezcept for the sludge. I stired it around with my finger, closed the bonnent and got back into the car. Put my foot on the brake peddle and it was quite tight. Later a drove the car around campus and the brakes felt fine. Guess I will have to wait until I drive home and see how it goes

Wigan, you're past the point of no return!

Safety.. Replace it, or take it to a shop that is competent and have them replace it.

The falling to the floor you felt, is where the contaminated fluid is passing by the seals internally and not building pressure. Possibility that the bore is pitted. If so, either resleeve or replace. If not pitted, then you can rebuild it.

Dot 3 and Dot4 brake fluids are hyGroscopic, i.e. they absorb moisture, moisture in the fluid turns to sludge and is composed of some acids. Therefore, for safety, you need to replace your brakefluid every two years or 24K miles, or more frequently in a high humidity environment.

Your cylinder has failed, don't let its failure cause you a hospital trip. Fix it.

I absolutely agree with Ron... Just replace the MC, flush the lines and slaves...

'Tis a lot cheaper than fixing your LBC after you ran into something... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
