T-Series Brake light switch won't line up

Well,
I am down to the getting the Hazard lights to work and this problem, before I can go get the safety done on the '71.
The brake lights are always on. I can't seem to get the little switch lined up when the cover is screwed down, so that it is pushed in when the brakes are off.
Has anyone had this problem before and come up with a trick for this? The switch is fine, as I tried the one from the GT as well... It just won't line up with the pedal assembly.

Thanks

Paul

Most likely someone in the past has assembled the pedal pivot pieces wrong. Check your manual. The large washers go to the inside of each pedal. Also I've seen earlier brake pedals installed in later cars. The early pedal does not have the flat area to touch the brake light switch.

Thanks Alan. I will grab a picture in a little bit. The part where it is supposed to rest on seems a touch worn and it looks like some brass solder was once on it. Perhaps someone tried to fix it before.
Maybe the picture will help.

Thanks

Paul

Yup Paul, we wanna see a photo. Sounds as if the pedal may need a bit of an "extension" mated to it to depress the switch. I modified a pal's setup long ago ago with a Microswitch (the real thing; industrial) as a replacement and AFAIK it functioned for years after.

This is what it looks like:

Oh my goodness, nasty nasty. Looks like master is or was leaking as well. Take it all out and start over, hehe.

Not that that helps with the switch at all.

That's quite a bend in the lever. It's been a while since I had my pedal box apart but I don't recall there been a bend like that in the brake lever.

I think Alan's on the right track with the assembly. Should be washers and spacers in there. If you can get a look at another pedal box assembly, this should tell you what's going on. Parts catalogues (ie. Moss or Victoria British) are good for pictures.

Thanks Simon. I didn't think that bend looked right either. Here is a picture I just took of the box on my GT. Big differance.
I can't keep taking stuff off the GT though.......

o_O I like that pedal box design MUCH better than the pedal box design on my '76. I understand that the design of the box on my '76 is to accomodate the brake servo, but I still think they could have done a better job at making the linkages a lot more accessible. It's not fun messin' with the linkages in the pedal box on power brake 'Bs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Looks like one of those centering things is in order.

Ya. It looks like there is, maybe, a 1 1/2" dowel spacer and a washer missing. I knocked the pedal arm over with a hammer and screwdriver as far as it would go, and the switch lines up fine now. But.. I cant get the bolt out to put the washer and if needed, the spacer.
Back to work, but at least I know what is going on now.

Paul

Fixed

Made my own spacer and put it in. Works just like they should now. Looks like maybe the DPO didn't have enough space between the gas pedal and the brake pedal and that is how he rectified the situation.
YEEE HAWWW

It must be another endearing feature of LBCs that the metal under the master cylinder has to be rusty; mine looks the same way. Glad I switched to DOT 5, maybe what little paint is left will stay.

Eliminating DPO "modifications" goes a looong way to fixing problems too, Dave (and Paul)! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Temp. fix Doc. Temp fix.

Your GT pedal is "correct". The spacer-bent pedal-NO washer box is an abomination. Temp or not, whatever rectifies the "no brakelight" problem is better than what you had.

Looks like the hinge bolt is bent too.
