brake light problem 67 BJ8

I have a 67 BJ8. I am having to press fairly hard on the brake pedal to get the brake lights to come on. I thought I would get some input before I go digging around under there. I have the manuals, but it's not real clear on troubleshooting this area.

thanks
dr

I'm not a Healey expert, but if it uses a hydrolic switch like my Jag, it is probably a dirty switch, or poor connection/ground.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

The little secret nobody seems to know is that the hydralic switch can be purchased OTC at any auto parts store. It is off the early fords(30ish)and costs appx 3.00 $$ I guess Lucas just copied itso it could cause trouble too.(for more $$)

My experience with silicon fluid is the brake switches seem to go bad much more frequent that with regular fluid. That may be your problem.
I know a VW 60's Beetle switch will work on my BT7 but not on a BJ8. I think the BJ8 switch has a bevel on it and the BT7 is flat.
Good luck.

I just had the same problem and solved it by purchasing a new switch from British Parts Connection. I don't recall the price, but seems like it was $15 or so. It is also available from several other sources such as Victoria and Moss. There are two types: The later BJ8s use a switch with a blade connection for the wire connection and the others are connected with screws. The location is on the right wheel well area below the horn. Not difficult to replace, but I went ahead and removed the horn first to make access easier. Additionally, it is a good idea to "fill" the switch with fluid prior to installation as there would otherwise be an air bubble with resultant heavier brake pedal exertion needed to make the lights illuminate. Good luck! Replacing a switch is much easier than other solutions if it isn't the switch! Steve
