Seems my cap lets fluid out, therefor the cap and can's black paint is being dissovled.

Can I clean, then scuff the outside of the can and cap; then respray with Rustoleum primer then gloss black?

I have a new seal to put in the cap. By HELP products. #42072 Called Master Cylinder Gasket. Read on this forum, that it will help keep the fluid in the can. Photo attached

Conments on repainting?
Ok to ad fluid to existing fluid or empty all present fluid and refill it with only one brand? What brand, weight, where to purchase, etc?

I use and recommend Castrol GTLMA brake fluid. It exceeds Dot 3 & 4 specs. The LMA is low moisture activity formulation. You don't want to mix Dot 3 or 4 with DOT 5 which is considerably different, silicone I believe. If you don't know what is in there now, it might be a good time to change it.
Finally, I have repainted my reservoir can a couple of times. It should last until you get more brake fluid on it, at which point the paint will come off again. I wrap aluminum foil around the surrounding area and just spray paint the reservoir in place.

Roger,
Some of the "Help" gaskets have a tiny hole in them. The seal will be better if you put a drop of sealer over the top side of the hole. I had good luck with standard JB Weld. In fact, I soaked some cured JB Weld in brake fluid for three months & the fluid didn't touch it.

Haven't had any fluid get out to bother the newly painted can yet.

I agree with Skip on the LMA.

Roger,

I sprayed mine with an industrial 2 part paint (type you add hardner too) since it is very chemical resistant. The paint they make specifically for brake calipers would be worth looking into, especially if you have spray equipment. If not, you could get one of those Preval units https://www.prevalspraygun.com/ Just be more careful around 2 part paints. Always use a respirator and gloves.

You might also consider replacing the aluminum washers used to seal the fittings at the bottom of the can with Stat-O-Seal washers. I got mine through Napa auto but then found they make an aluminum version that would be better for this application.

Well Roger, ifin you really want to stop all that painting bit wid the reservoir, have it copper plated and then powdercoat it black.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
