The nuts holding the brake drums on have what appears to be round retainers or some sort of washer on the ouside of the nut. Are these lock nuts or are they part of the nut itself. I need to get these off to get to the brakes and do not wnat to break any thing. Anybody familiar with these.

Doesn't sound familiar on a Healey; an American GM product used to put Timmerman nuts on the studs, presumably to keep the rear drums in place until the wheels were fitted during production.

How about providing us with a picture, then maybe we can help you?

Is your car fitted with wire wheels, or steel disc wheels?

They are the self-locking portion of the nut, they come off w/nut(one piece assembly),stock . cheers Genos2

I'd consider when tightening them back up using some sort of a thread sealer...My 100 nuts loosened up after a couple hundred miles even when torqued properly..

I have wire wheels and one nut came off very easily using a 17mm deep socket.

The other four turn but the whole bolt is turning. Looks like trouble to me.

Do these come loose from the backing plate or are the bolts fluted so they do not turn. Options Heat? Drill em out put in new ones I know there must be a better way..
Let me see if I can figure out how to up load a picture of the drum

The lug bolts (studs) have flukes for a press fit into hub assembly. Sometimes these work there way loose, either cut w/cutoff wheel or air chisel. They can be a pain in the you know what. cheers Genos2

Thanks for all the suggestions. Got a can of cold stuff.. Takes the bolt and metal down to -40 or so and it came right off. Got all the drums cleaned and new kire wheels installed. Brakes looked new emery cloth on the drums and brake cleaner made them like new. Now to get bleed them.
thanks again
