I was helping my son last weekend work on his house in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans when from the back yard we could hear a few rounds pop off about a block away. Police sirens, things calmed down. Two hours later, same thing. Minded our business, stayed working in the back. Around 4 that afternoon (Sunday) I heard a very distinct 8-round rapid fire of a semiautomatic go off way too close. Again, police sirens. We laid low for about 10 minutes then went to investigate. There on the street, one house over, was a young black man groaning while the paramedics were trying to slow the bleeding with one shot in his butt. This had been a back-and-forth ongoing dispute between several young dudes around the corner from the house that culminated in one of them being shot. The police had marked with green cones the eight shell casings, they had all been shot in our direction! Checked for bullet holes in the cars on the street, nothing. Police detective went house to house asking everyone had they seen anything. No one saw nothing. When in fact everyone did. But you learn early on to keep your mouth shut.
Earlier that morning, I had employed 2 very young black children to help unload lumber from our truck, in that very spot. Gave them a dollar apiece to go buy themselves a snow cone for carrying some 2x4's for me.
My son took this whole thing very hard. I have seen enough violence in my life to just move on, this was his first time (I had been raised violent, my kids have lead a fairly protected and loved life).
When does it end? Never, I guess.
