TR2/3/3A Bouncy Speedo ... Lubrication

My speedo cable in my 56 TR3 has been bouncing a bit between 40 and 60 mph. From reading other posts it seems this is most likely a cable issue. I have removed the cable and its inner core and cleaned both. There seemed to be a fair bit of oil near the transmission end, so I may have to replace an O-ring in the transmission (or simply too much oil was used to lubricate before)?

Seems that there are several recommendations about lubrication. Use a sparing amount of wheel bearing grease, avoiding the last third of the cable near speedo; use motor oil, but make sure to use sparingly and wipe off excess; or use graphite (I do have some small tubes of powdered graphite). I also have some spray silicone lubricant that I wondered about using. Both ends of the cable seem good to me, and the cable itself is new looking with no visible damage.

What (if any) is the consensus on what to use for lubrication and what is best method of applying this lubricant? Cheers, Mike
