With a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer finally on the horizon, after three postponements starting in the spring of 2020, I had placed an order for what is probably to be the last DSLR to be named Olympus, the OM-1. It came with an 12-40mm pro f2.8 lens kit. I have not been able to take too many test shots yet, but I am playing with some of the new features that I want for this trip, especial the AI AF for birds in flight. I will post more about it when I get home from the trip.x29-IMG_5855.jpg

Nice, Dave! And glad you are getting to finally make the trip, too.

Also pleased that Olympus has retained the OM-1 designation.

The company that took over is now named OM System, and future cameras will use that name instead of Olympus. This model was supposedly in development before the sale and is a combination of the work by Olympus, and by the new owners. I am glad that they plan to keep developing the products.

Nice! Have you historically been an Olympus shooter? Did you consider any other brands?

My first digital SLR was Olympus, because at that time their US headquarters were in the 'neighborhood'. Since I had lenses what an adapter would allow me to use with their mirrorless series, I stayed with Olympus, and now have two DSLRs, one of their Pen cameras, and three mirrorless DSLRs. The camera shop said my older E-M1 Mk 1 was not pristine enough to trade in. Before that I had mostly Minoltas when shooting 35mm. It seems that the brand I start with I stay with because of the lenses.

That Makes sense. In my case I'm a Canon shooter but only because my first "SLR" Camera was a Canon (they had a deal on it at the BX in Athens). It wasn't because I had any great insight into Canon vs Nikon vs anything else. But as I was used to the Canon, it was a natural progression to move to a Canon when I bought my first DSLR and been with Canon ever since.

First 'real' system SLR's (film) were Mirandas. Moved into Nikons when I could afford 'em. Went with Nikon's DSLR crop-sensor ones just recently, as my AiS and older glass are F-Mount and can be used on these bodies as well. No real 'jones' to go to full-frame since it has become an enjoyable passtime now, not doing it for a living anymore.
