bought a 69 Sprite, gotta horn question

Okay, the good news is we bought a 1969 Sprite in overall great shape. The bad news is the horn doesn't work. The actual horn is there, the wires go up the tube. Now, when I take the emblem cap off, the is no brass cup, spring, etc. And there is no opening for the push apparatus to slide down into. Here's my stupid question of the day - how do you blow the horn on a 69? Is it the old center push, or is it on one of the column levers? I've never had a Sprite this new!!

Thanks,
Larry

The horn on a 1969 is not in the steering wheel center button.
It is on the end of the turn signal stalk....

Push in on the end towards the steering column and it will honk.

I have a 1969...

Hi Larry - We thought it might be something like that. It does not work, but now I know where to start! There's a lot of dash board differences compaqred to our 59 and 67. The 67 is being stripped down for parts, the frame is bent beyond repair. We're putting it's 1275 and disc brakes into the bugeye, but that's another story. Thanks a lot!! :savewave:

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ping me... I will see what I can do to answer.

On the horn, is the stalk end seems to work up and down, it could be ground on the horn itself, or the stalk button's contacts are corroded.

Great! That will be the first things to check. What's the little toggle switch halfway down the left side of the steering column?

Larry

Ya know, I keep asking myself that..You may not want to play with it a lot as a nuclear holocaust may occur...I will have to go back and check...I will post once I get time to check this evening.

I seem to remember it being the switch to turn the dashboard lights on/off, but I haven't used it (or those brain cells) for a long time.

Larry

I thought it might be the ejector buttom for the passenger seat

Larry,

I just got back from a nice morning breakfast ride in my car with my wife. After getting the car back into the shop, I checked this out......

Indeed as my feeble brain remember.... when you turn the headlights on and toggle the switch on the side of the steering column, the dashboard back lights for the speedo/tach/water/oil are turned on/off......

and then a nuclear holocaust occurs.....I hate it when that happens....

Cheers,

Larry

And I have yet to have an occasion on my 68 when I want to have the dashboard/instrunment lamps off. Can't hardly see them anyway at night. Take apart, clean the cans up, paint the insides white and reassemble seems to help.

Jim, did painting the cans white really help all that much?

As usual, the small bulbs used to do back lighting never generated that much light in the first place.

If painting white helps I might consider it. I was actually hoping that there would be some brilliant company out there that would come up with an LED replacement that would fit in the same socket. That would help two fold. Brighter light and less drain on the electrical system.

Ok, I know those little bulbs don't draw all that much, but we are dealing with a Lucas electrical system here....

Hay, stock bulbs are bright enough even for my old eyes.

Just make sure the glass and the plastic window insert is clean.

Guess I took mine all apart and cleaned and such.
