I'd always heard that "MGs" stood for "Memphis Group". But I also heard that when they needed a name for the band they saw an MG out in the Stax parking lot and used that.

On topic, anyone who likes music should really search out "McLemore Avenue" by Booker T. and the MG's. It's a (mostly) instrumental reworking of the Beatles' "Abbey Road". It is about seven different kinds of awesome.
