Before I attach the cable to the hood latch I want to thoroughly lubricate the cable to ensure smooth operation. What lube should I use or, more importantly, what lube should I avoid using?

I can't recommend the lube type, but I strongly advise you to install an emergency release in case the cable breaks. It is basically a rod that enters into the foot well of the passenger compartment. Don't leave home without it...

It looks like this, and can be made or purchased.

I put an emergency pull on every TR6 ( & TR4) I get. I make my own. In fact I use it more than I do the cable pull. Every easy pull to open. Don't leave home without it!

I think the classic recommendation would be a lithium-based grease. But I've been using a synthetic grease (SuperLube), and have been happy with it so far. It seems more slippery, and I don't think it will dry out as other greases will (though I've not been using it for the 10-20 years that the other greases seem to take to break down).
