I finally put a new hot water gauge was very carefully running the cable though the fire wall and coiling and tieing up the extra so it would vibrate against thing.
I stated it up and all was good it heated up fine.

so today a beautiful top down day I went out for a ride now hot water gauge . where i coiled it up there seems to be some mercury.

its from moss it says smiths
i thought it was a slivery liquid on the loop a made (trying to prevent this)
how long should it take to heat up it was a short drive this morning but there were a few lights
 
I can go one mile when cold and I'll see it moving up
 
Be sure you have a good ground. I have personal experience with the capillary tube becoming the ground from the engine. It wasn't pretty.

It can be repaired. Those bourbon tube type temp gauges usually contain ether and are pretty much all the same. You can get a cheap new donor gauge and swap the capillary tube to the smiths gauge but you have to be careful.
 
yeah getting out was difficult but un screwing it and running the engine helped
I sent it back to moss we will see if i get a refund

so I could get a cheep one and just do the tube... interesting

I've repaired several of these capillary temp gauges, one of them a couple of years ago for my TR3 which is still operating fine.

Follow the instructions from this site. The trick is to keep the ether in the bulb while you splice things together. That's done with a slurry of heavily salted ice water.

Hi Steve,
Did you have the little spacer in place on the head? I damaged the bulb on mine by screwing it directly in the head without that spacer.
 
Not to miss what Peter said, check the ground strap to your motor. I had my tube repoaced several yrs. ago. Care installing while screwing the end into the block is the one thing I remember.
 
ahh good point Ill put in a spacer with the next one if moss just sends me another other wise Ill look at fixing the original one. the ground strap looked ok when i was welding up the floors last year
