JP, the engine compartment will have all of the flat areas skinned with sheet aluminum. Additionally, the dash and inner door skins will be aluminum. There were two objectives of the cutouts, one as Donn mentioned, to offset the additional weight of the aluminum, and also to preclude some of the inevitable chatter of the two panels touching in the center as a result of vibration. The remaining lattice of steel will provide a frame to carry the aluminum panels.

The photo Donn included above is of the rear bulkhead/boot floor lap. I reinforced the seam there and also on the underside at the top of the curve, where the rear legs of the roll bar attach. On the top of the curve I added a 1"x1" steel tube between the wheel wells, also for reinforcement. While the front legs of the roll bar have a fairly substantial structure to mount to, the rear mounts were weak before the modifications. The "B" pillars also got an angle bracket where they attach to the sills. I figure the total weight of the added braces is less than 10 pounds; peace of mind is a lot more than that.
