Body Patch Kits

Has anyone used the rear fender patch kits, Moss 455-705for a Midget? I have a lot of rust and am trying to decide which is the best way to go.

Yup, strip first, then make your decision. I generally try to go two inches beyond the rust.

How far up from the bottom do they go? I would like to decide before purchasing.

Call Moss, they can tell you and it is a toll free call.

D&S,
Go to the bodywork section of my "Spridget Project" page and you will see photos of the rear quarters with black lines indicating the coverage of the patch panels. Look a bit further doown the page and you will also see additional black lines and even the full repair panels themselves in place. This should help a lot in making your decision. The URL of the page you want to check out is:

Very cool website and pics Ray. Never seen that before. I do think its funny that we did almost the same thing on that recessed plate.

Great pics.. by the way, what's involved in taking the shell off the chassis? I have my 65 completly stripped ready to paint and am wondering if I should go all the way and take the shell off.

Shell, chassis. Heck the shell is the chassis. The chassis is the shell.

jack said it. No chassis here. Pure british unibody. Quite easy to strip it down BTW. In comparison to most other cars. Now putting it back together well thats an other story

As has already been mentioned, there is not a chassis separate from the body shell...it is unibody.

The engine rails are connected at the front and with two uprights form the radiator support. They extend back beyond the firewall terminating into the cross member at the back end of the footwell. The footwell sides, tops, and floor pans form boxes that contribute to the strength of the front end. The primary structural members from the cross member back include the inner and outer sills (forming a box beam) and the transmission tunnel (don't underestimate the strength of the thin sheet metal when it is formed into a closed shape). At the rear of the passenger area the tunnel and sills meet the rear bulkhead; they are joined by the transmission/bulkhead seam and at the sills by the "B" pillars. NOTE - the B pillars are frequently rusted in the lower portion and that will certainly diminish the integritiy of the structure. The rear clip of the car "hangs" on the "B" pillars with support also provided by the front end of the boot floor which is welded to the bulkhead. On a quarter elliptic car, where all suspension parts attach at the bulkhead, you could literally drive the car without the rear clip so long as you had a means of delivering fuel to the engine.

Ray it's all back in one piece. Horray. Keep in going. You're my inspiration to start taking Bugsy apart to fix him.

PS There is a very large and very heavy box under the tree for me from Santa. Somehow I think nope know I'll be learning to weld right after Christmas.

Good for you, Jim! Gotta act surprised though.

After all the holiday festivities, there will be some house cleaning in order. Offer to run out and pick up a few "cleaning supplies". Did you know the home supply mega stores (Lowes, Home Depot) have an aisle with cleaning supplies...just a few aisles down from the SHEET METAL AND STRUCTURAL STEEL display?

Get some and paractice a bit...cleaning and welding /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif .

Will do Ray, I just gotta keep admiring your courage in the face of rust. No matter what CUT IT OUT!

ok... I'll show the complete depth of my ignorance...
shell chassis... I just want the tub off the wheels...
what connects the shell bone to the wheel bones?

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

haha, bolts mostly. That is difficult to answer, just take out the bolts that hold the rear end on for starters. Everyone you see back there.

John, I'd suggest getting a good shop manual, such as a Bentley manual. It details practically the entire disassembly of the car. You can pretty well field strip one in an afternoon.

Cool Pic Ray - you've probly explained this elsewhere but what's with all the cut outs on the fender inners and
firewall? weight? secret compartments? missile launchers?
