I would have said it was one of the bolts fastening the bell housing to the rear plate of the engine and someone shaved off one flat to clear the casting....
 
My BN1 has four of those attaching the gearbox flange to the driveshaft as Keoke said. I also have four more of those attaching the differential flange to the driveshaft. Mine is an early rear end so I don't know if the BN2 needs these.
