That's the body number; issued by Jensen's during the time the body was assembled. There should also be a VIN plate similar to mine shown below...

Thanks Randy Forbes, but this is an early BN1 with the two piece dash, thought these only had the plastic ID plate inside the cockpit

Your fire wall looks just like my BN-1. BN-2s had the plate like Randy's, BN-1s had the plastic plate in the driver's side foot well.
