How do you turn off the Check Engine light?

Granddaughter left the gas tank cap loose and it came on and will not go off. Manual says see the dealer. Shoot I'll take the bulb out first.

And yes I know which fourm this is but I see BMWs in folks garage pics.

Strange that BMW says take it to the dealer. Many cars will turn the light off by themselves, though it may take a few driving cycles (start, run, drive for a while, stop) to clear them.

What year is the car? It may be an ODB II car. If so, you can borrow the code reader from Autozone and use that to clear the error code. I don't know if Kraut cars use ODB II. All US and Japense cars made after around 95 do.

Woops sorry, 1997 318 TI.

All cars sold in the US are OBDII after '95. It's one (of many) things that kept the MGF from being sold here.

The code-reader should work.

Disconnect both battery terminals.
Touch plus terminal to ground.
Works in my '00 Miata when the gas cap is left loose. Not sure about BMWs but worth a shot.

Many cars will "kill" the light after "X" number of re-starts (it's about 30 on the Miata I think).

Thanks guys, it's off now. Did it all by its self.

Nice work, I am proud of you, order a catalog from them for down the road.

Oh, that was a fun site. Lots of good stuff, look at the nice horns under electrical, last page for $20. Bet they would work well on a Bug.
