My wife saw a "Steller’s Jay" in our yard on Thanksgiving morning, so I grabbed the camera and sat out in the yard for a while hoping to snap some pics of that bird, which is very rarely seen in our area. Never did see the Steller's Jay, but did manage to get a few shots of some lovely Western Bluebirds.

Steller's Jay. Named after George Wilhelm Steller who noticed them in 1741. The Steller's sea lion and Steller's Eider were also named for him. Close relatives of our eastern Blue Jays, also very clever and alert.

Interesting. And I see that I misspelled "Steller" in original post (which I have corrected).

For my birthday (don't ask which one), I bought myself a Nikon P900 super zoom camera for birding. Goes out to 2000 mm. Now all I have to do is learn how to use it - especially without a tripod. My daughter gets great zoom results with a far simpler camera - a Canon SX530. I would have gotten one but it has no viewfinder and I can't look at the LCD screen in bright sunlight. The EVF on the Nikon is no bargain either. I find I have to use my left eye when the sun is over my right shoulder. I still have a couple of old film cameras for backup - just in case.
