Blown head gasket??

Dale,

If you moved from 5 to 16 degrees it is natural that the idle would go up quite a bit. Back it down to 950 and recheck the timing. You may have to do this once or twice in the process to get it on the money and then lock it down and reset the idle to 900-950 or whatever is close to that RPM and gives you a smooth idle with no stalling.

I have mine at 16 BTDC at 850-900 RPM and it sounds good and never stalls.

with the valve breather pipe disconnected, there is a noticable increase in top end engine noise, plus smoke that would other wise be 'recycled' back into the motor.
With regard to Miata's and Beemers, that sounds like fightin' words...........
Regards
Craig
