I concur, almost. Smokey Yunick said that the oil had to be at a MINIMUM of 180 to be working. He preferred 190-200. I know of no one that knew the internal combustion engine better, so I give him credence.

sorry,it seems that it's not just a different language we speak but also differing temperature scales, mine was in the Centigrade scale, which translates to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Albeit that the sensor is low in the sump which could be slightly cooler than elsewhere?

Agreed Alec, Smokey preferred taking temp readings before oil cooler entry.


When I was wrenching for a two car Formula Three team in 72, we were sponsored by Valvoline, I had several lengthy discussions with their engineers on the oil cooler setups we had on the Martinis. Wound up taping part of the cooler on several of the longer tracks(Monza, Magny Cours, etc.) Just so that the temperature would get up to what they considered "proper" operating temp.
