Indeed. A while back they announced the plan to FINALLY add the black / yellow plates to the YOM program. As a result, THIS is what happened to plates we used to buy for $5 a pair.

WOW!!!
I'll take half that figure for the set I've got at home
They are originals from 63 that were on the El Camino when I bought it in LA

Sometimes I think the world has gone crazy, other times I'm sure.

Is that what those things are worth? I've got the set that came with the Tunebug, in pretty good shape (not nearly as good as the ones on eBay, but usable). I'm gonna hang em on my wall. Silly what folks will pay.

I picked up a set off ebay a couple of months ago like Drew's for $35. I had heard about the new law and figured I'd better jump on it before the gouging started. If only I could do that with stocks. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Steve,

Wow!I've got a set from my Dad that's never been
on a car. It's real tempting to sell for that kind of money.

WOW! I have some of those too, cool /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Heck- I have 4 or 5 sets that I would sell for 1/10th of that (or probably less!)

Those were exceptionally expensive because of the "SSS" on them. I bought a really desirable set of orange/black plates for my MGA for only a third of that, and those plates are generally worth a lot more than later ones.

Ok, who wants to sell me some nice clean black/yellow plates with an interesting combo on them? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I bought an antique Buick convertible from a lady in New Jersey a few years ago and it had her husbands original tags on it. He died in the late forties and the car was kept covered up in the carriage house ever since. He was a man of stature and he had special limited edition plates on it. They are 1932 NJ plates. I sold the car but still have the plates. They look like new. Might be worth a couple of bucks. I also have accumulated a few other old plates over the years including a NY Worlds Fair set.

My "collection" of old tags consists of a couple dozen or so of my prior ones, all taped together takin' up space on a shelf here inna garage. Ain't worth a whit, most likely. But I've always thought I'd "wallpaper" a portion of the garage wall with 'em. A sort of personal automotive "progression" or "migration" mural.

Let me know if you aint gonna use them Doc. I have a small collection myself hanging on the interior garage doors. I kinda like the look of them hanging there myself.

All you "collectors" need to dig around and find a nice set for my '67 BGT. No need to let them sit unused! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

These are the plates that came with my '52. I've no real use other than they came on the car but would take a hunk of cash if I was offered. That's a lotta green for a set of plates.

In general, black/yellow plates aren't worth much. The high prices are for mint condition plates with an interesting letter combo. I suspect that 'SSS' set above were bought by a wealthy muscle car owner. Before the YOM program allowed them, they went for a few dollars each.

Orange/black plates, which came before black/yellow ones, are far more rare and desirable and they will usually get between $50 and $150 in decent condition, with DMV-clear numbers. Based on this I would expect a price of around $35 for a set of random number DMV-clear plates in decent condition.

BTW Vince, if you ever want to get rid of the MAV plates, I'd take 'em! It's actually an abbreviation of an old nickname of mine. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I always wished we could use period correct plates on old cars here in Illinois-I've yet figured out how to do it. I hate the current IL plate style, but they look just stupid on the MG, and we'd love to have a set of period correct '71 IL tags for it. The older blue lettering on white background looked okay, but the new Lincoln plates are hideous.

I've had the same registration number since 1993, when I bought a Honda CRX in college, and simply transferred the reg to the next car. I still have the original blue and white plates. I also have the original plates from my old Midget, registered in 1990-they're the early 80's plate blanks. Come to think of it, the Midget plates are in the trunk of the Miata now.

Last fall I bought a reasonably clean 1974 Illinois plate (the year I was born), and its sitting on the bookshelf. Cost? One whole dollar.

I was always under the impression that old black plates (as well as the blue ones) were legal in California, as long as they were original to the car?

Any year plate is legal so long as it was registered to the car when the plate was current. So a 1929 car which came to California in 1965 and was assinged a black/yellow plate is fine. A 1929 car that came to CA this year would be assigned a modern plate. You could use the YOM program to assign an old plate, but only a 1929 plate appropriate for the type of vehicle, and the numbers have to be clear in the DMV computer.

Blue/yellow (70's-80's) plates are not in the YOM program and therefore once removed from a vehicle they cannot be reassigned to anything. This was also true of black/yellow (60's-70's) plates until just recently, which is why they are now being bought up.
