BJ8 Wiper motor

I've a problem with the right hand wiper on my BJ8, I think the teeth are stripped so it just slops about, drivers wiper works ok so no problem with motor. I've got the parts (rack and wheel boxes) and reading the manual it seems easy to remove the wiper system but looking at it in situ, it looks to me that it means disasembling the whole dash to get it out. Can it be removed without taking the dash apart and if so what tricks should I know? If the whole unit is difficult to remove, can the right hand wheel box be changed without taking the rack out?

Only half the dash!! You need to get behind and above the glove box. You need to remove the ctr console and radio console. There's screws for the glove box to dash but don't remove those.

Remove the glove box RH side attaching bolts and rear bracket. The top nut above the box holding the dash on maybe the hardest to reach. Sometimes the wiper gear box 2 screws come loose and can be tightened but considering the age of the wiper system you should at least rotate the gear inside 180 degrees for wear patern problems. This is about a two six pack job.

Thanks Patrick, job done today. You were right the top screws were impossible to get at because of the heater box pipe and it's cardboard cousin. However by removing the outer screws on the RH side dash and the two screws on the middle dash section, I was able to pull the outer half of the dash far enough forward to access the wheel box. I also found it usefull to take out the passenger seat for ease of access when having to lie under the dash to see. I wish that the wheel box I removed was a fifty year old one but it's a modern reproduction, exactly the same as the new one I just put in it. I hope the one I took out was a friday afternoon job and the replacement will last longer. It seems fine now but just about to start a 2000 mile 3 week round trip in the car to Switzerland and Spain. If we get much rain and the passenger side fails again it'll have to be wiper off and her indoors in the passenger seat can see through my eyes. I'll keep a lookout for some NOS wheel boxes, anyone know who might have some?

Try BCS for a good used wheelbox. Also get a bottle of Rainx and use that for your windshield. It works better than the wipers!
Have a good trip!
