BJ8 window glass installation??

I have order new glass and glazing strips from Moss, they have proved very difficult to install. I'm actually wondering if they are too thick. Please share some tricks to getting the glass into the frames with glazing strips. TIA DAT

Welcome to the forum!

They probably are too thick. You can get thinner glazing strip from an automotive window installation shop. Probably best to take in the glass and rails so they can help you get the right thickness. I've also heard that motor oil can be used to soften/lubricate the glazing rubber allowing installation and when it drys the rubber gets sticky. I haven't tried this myself so experiment first or perhaps someone else will chime in. Another option is to use the black silicone type sealer that they use to install windshields. It will hold the glass very well but may be next to impossible to remove in the future.

Hi DTurner, here is my take on BJ8 window glass.Most of the glasses can be installed by the novice except the door glasses. For these glasses the nylon sliders should be replaced. To replace the bottom slider requires that the frame be completely disassembled then reassembed with the proper rivits.In my case with NOS glass, the glass had to be trimmed to clear the rivits in the frame. This required a water cooled grinder and lots of try and error.Therfore. I suggest that these glasses be taken to a pro for installation.--Fwiw---Keoke
 
Unfortunately my original door glass had scratches but had no problems installing the glass that I bought from Moss. This was for a BJ7 and yes the frame needed to be disassembled to install the nylon guides and pop rivets used for assembly. On one frame there was a small corner cross brace that had broken loose that needed rewelding but the rivets were in the corner on one side of the brace and the glass was on the other side. keoke,hmm,replaced all the nylon glides on both windows,removing rivets etc. and didnt have any trouble or need to grind any glass,is that because i used the original glass,or are the bj8 glass or tracks diff. from my bj7? i used a piece of inner tube to replace the seal on the front part of the glass and trimmed it with a razor worked like a charm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif in your case i thought "FWIW" ment "fast witty intelligent wise" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif oh and the third word is "its" not "it is" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif or it would be "fwiiw" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

I am not sure Anthony, I have not done that on my BJ7 so I can not comment on them.However, I do know you will not get a BJ8 window glass in its frame using innertube rubber for the seals.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif
 
keoke,perhaps "seal" isnt the correct term for the inner tube, its just the material i chose for the friction fit between the front track/rail that the leading edge of the glass slides into,mine were dried up and cracked,this is pict. of rubber before trimming, see attch.and at least on a bj7 it does work,these windows now go up and down with just two fingers on the crank handle.very "schmood" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif as per moss part #680-307-"vertical channel glazing."they are inexpensive $8.90 for both.

I will soon have feedback as I just ordered new glass from VB and the $8.90 seals from Moss for my BJ8. Also have 6 nylon inserts on the way. I wonder what caused the original window glass on both sides to scratch in a line across the width of the glass about 1/3 of the way down from the top edge ? Another design problem that needs attention ? Extra rubber or cushioning needed somewhere inside of the doors ? Please comment if you know what causes this wear pattern on the glass. If it wasn't for this, I could still use the original glass.

Hi Ed,

Usually scratches on the door glass are from using screws that are too long to hold the grab handle. The screws scratch the glass when the window is rolled up and down so they are vertical scratches/gouges. You said the scratches were in a line across the width of the glass? Both sides of the glass or both left and right windows have scratches?(if so, inside or outside?). When you pull the door panels you can inspect the window frame and regulator (try moving/shaking the parts sometimes welds break loose or bolts missing), alignment, window top seals/clips, etc. There might be part of the regulator that traces a horizontal path. There is no need for extra cushioning or rubber if everything is set up correctly.

Also, just a warning for anyone following this .. anytime window glass has deep scratches it should be replaced. Since it is tempered glass it is manufactured under pressure and with scratches the strength is compromised. One of mine literally exploded while stopped to fill up with gas. Luckily no one was injured.

John, I didn't take the car apart so this may explain my dumb sounding question about the scratch pattern. After looking at it again, the outside of both windows is where the worse scratches are and they seem to line up with the outside seal ? between the glass and the door when the glass is all the way rolled up. There are other less noticeable scratches going up and down, also on the outside surface. I guess the seals were worn out between the glass and the door. When I put it back together, I'll check for any other problems as I will have all new gaskets/seals when I put it back together.
 
Hi ED, Yep those window seals get old and hard, trap dirt and vibrate which abrades the glasses.Replacing the seals periodically will take care of this along with good cleaning when you wash the car.---Keoke
 
edk, id thought about adding rollers of my own design but found that spending time tunning the arc/curve of the main track (the one the vent window is afixed to) helped a great deal with the problem i was having with mine,in the past keoke mentioned using felt roofing paper to take out the oil caning of the door skin,as per your horizontal scratching of the glass i can not come up with a reasonable explaination. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ed, have you worked on these windows any? I have not tackled this project yet, but I have taken the frames apart and I did order all the pieces to replace everything.
Frankly, I have had the wind blown out of my sails on this project lately. I'm very close and did a full restoration of a '64 BJ8. I'm looking forward to cruising this site some more in my "free time", ha ha, and hopefully getting inspired to get going strong! Thanks again,
