BJ8 Serial numbers

I am looking at a 1967 BJ8 with a serial number in the 37800 range. Every source I can find shows 1967 serials starting at 39975, so is this car a 66? I see other cars listed in the registry with similar serials showing as 67s. What am I missing? How can I verify model year by serial?

It will tell you what year the car is thats what the diff is
 
I understand that. My question was what is the diff between 66 and 67 mounts? Also, why doesn't the serial number tell you the year?
 
Car may have been manufactured in 1966 but not registered untill 1967 as a 1967. Happens a lot.
 
Many thanks. So the serial numbers used in various publications refer to calendar year of manufacture and not model year?

A 66 and earlier BJ8 will have two anchors. A 67 will have only one. Engineering upgrades you know---Keoke--- :laugh:

The British didn't focus on "model years" or change their design/specs every year just to give the sales dept something to shout about, as US manufacturers did. They just made changes whenever. The factories ceased production approximately during the month of August each year when everyone took vacation at the same time, but the cars made before and after the break also did not represent a change of "model years."

Therefore a Healey made in September 1966 is not any different from one made before the summer break, and the year recorded on the US title and registration had more to do with when the car was sold. A Healey may have been made in May 1966, shipped to the USA and sold in October 1966, and registered as a 1967 since the US manufacturers' "1967 models" came out on September 1966 and all new cars being registered with the DMV were considered 1967 models.

You may be able to buy a "2012 Belchfire" off the showroom floor right now, but that doesn't mean that it is now the year 2012 or that the car was built in the future.

Some people have been known to go out of their way to get their Healey that was made in 1966 or even in 1965 titled as a 1967 since there seems to be a definite impression on the part of some people that the "last year" of the marque is somehow more desirable. It's a mild fraud meant to increase sales price. I've seen it several times, particularly in the auction world.

I had a 67 that was titled as a 1969 as apparently it set around on a dealer's lot forever and first time it got titled was in 1969. Plus DMV's are infamous for making mistakes on the year and try getting that corrected later on. If you want to double check on the vin number, go to the right shock mount area on the vertical side of the steel right below the shock, is where the vin's were stamped on each BJ8. Of course that will possibly be covered with dirt and grease or paint but if you need to confirm, this is where to look for it.

Plus a lot of US Dealers think all cars with the dual side lights are 1967 cars---Keoke- :laugh:

...and license plate mounting. pre '67 is below the rear bumper, but I'm sure there is a serial number break there somewhere.
 
Hey Patrick67BJ8, I hate to set a bad example and go completely off topic (and maybe I'll delete this message and your response from the thread later; we'll see), but I've been meaning to ask you for a long time: What's up with that avatar of yours?

Looks like some kind of bird that is smoking and holding a bottle (presumably alcohol), and he has a knife in his back and he looks like he had a real rough night and/or been beat up.

What's the scoop? Inquiring minds want to know :yesnod:

That is the world famous "Puckered Pete" of the now decomissioned Navy squadron, VXE-6. The squadron ran for a total of 44 years making it the longest running squadron. I was an Aircraft Electrician and also a flight crew member for the LC-130F/R aircraft. We flew the continent of Antarctica supplying materials, etc. for the USARP, United States Antarctic research Program.

The bottle is alchohol, smoking was optional, the knife was a good ol stab in the back by someone not wanting to go the the "ICE". lol.
People see the avatar and I make connections with them. Google "VXE-6" for lots of history and good ol "Ice stories".
