BJ8 - Scoop and Grill Install ? - Close up Photos

Hello Team:

I have had the nose scoop finisher and grill re-chromed, and am attempting to reinstall on a BJ8. However, I can not get the orientation correct so that the finisher sits tight to the body on top.

Is the grill portion placed completly under the hood opening with the painted swag line visable. In other words does the grill hang behind the opening. Or, does the bottom of the grill exit the openning and cover the painted swag line lip.

Does anyone have a close up photo of their Bj8 scoop.

This is how mine is. I took it off for detailing over the winter, the alignment is not very good, but with the three nuts tightened up, it's acceptable. I don't have a means of presneting photo right now, if no one else posts one, I'll try to do one tomorrow.

Andrew, you have a private message. I can email some pics if you wish. The hood (bonnet) is sandwiched in between the surround on top of the hood and the grill which is fitted underneath. They do seem NOT to fit together very well, but that is the way it goes. It is very easy to scratch the paint when putting these on, so be careful. Might want to use some painters tape (blue). Also do not overtighten the nuts or you will dimple the surround as it is pulled to tight.

There must be some sort of buffer between the surround and the hood. Originally several small paper washers were used at each screw location. Without the buffers the surround will bend . I use small Rubber grommets as buffers between the surround and the painted hood.--Fwiw--Keoke

I'd like to hear/see the correct answer for this assembly too. I'm having a very hard time getting the grille to mount under the bonnet sheet metal but in front of the color strip that goes along the bottom of the opening. It could be I have too much buildup from the triple plate chrome on the grille and/or too much build up of skim coat/primer/paint on the bonnet.

I've heard experienced restorers say you put both parts on top of the sheet metal but that seems to leave a large ugly gap around the top surround part (at least on my bonnet).

I emailed you some pics of mine with the intake beneath the sheet metal (although you can't actually tell where it is attached from the pics).

I will admit to literally beating the parts into submission.

It wasn't pretty, but I used a rubber mallet and the top of the handle of my floor jack. I was able to shape the pieces to fit and align a bit better. I also re-used the paper spacers the factory installed. I'm happy with the result.

I also dimpled the surround /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif but not too badly.

Hi John, The buffers I mentioned earlier take up that void under the top eye brow. The grill part goes under the hood and it fits very much like the eyebrow on the front grill. Plating these parts sometimes without previously fitting them to the bonnet can leave the parts with a poor fit. some careful manipulation of the eyebrow may make it come close to fitting. OH! I forgot to mention that the side legs of some of the eyebrows are just too long they bottom on the hood before it can settle correctly---Keoke-?

Hi Keoke,

The top surround piece fits very well so the challenge is to fit the grille piece underneath. The grille is original and used to fit but suspect there is too much copper build up and/or paint thickness on the bonnet. I've been hesitant to sand/grind down the metal (in the non-visable fitting areas of course) but think that will be my next step. Another idea is to find an original grille that hasn't been rechromed to see if it fits.

Thanks everyone for the pictures and tips. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif

If anyone is still interested, I have some very detailed pictures of the back side of a correctly intstalled grille and surround that Steve Byers sent me. E-mail me at covercash1@aol.com and I will forward his pictures.

Re: BJ8 - Scoop and Grill Install ? - Close up Pho

Hi again gang.

Here I have taken photos of my scoop for some comments.

The first is with the grill portion covering the outside of the hood's swag line, with the chrome covering the lip.

The second photo is with the grill portion completely under the hood scoop and the hood's swag line visable.

Which way is correct?

I only see one Photo and it appears to be correct to me.--Fwiw--Keoke

The photo with the eyebrow being placed on seems correct to me. In the second photo you can see the grill mounting lip does not fit flush with the under side of the bonnet's scoop.---Keoke

Sorry Keoke, the photos are now there for your look-see.

Andrew,

From all the photos that I've looked at the first photo is correct. All the grille slats should be visible, i.e. in front of the hood swage line. Once you tighten things up the grille should go more vertical. Worth repeating .. be extremely careful not to over tighten the fasteners holding the surround because the chrome surround will dimple. Use rubber spacers on the surround studs, use nylock nuts or blue lock-tite on plain nuts and no wrenches/ratchets. I just use a long socket and cinch the nuts down finger tight.

Cheers,
John

Re: BJ8 - Scoop and Grill Install ? - Close up Pho

Hi Team:

I am still looking for any close up photographs of an Austin Healey hood scoop. I've done a fair amount of book research and google image searching..... but can't find an image that is up close enough to see the correct alignment.

If you can spare an image, it would greatly appreciated!
