BJ8 restoration process

Harold,

It's really looking good and appears you are making quick progress. I was wondering about the copper looking brake and clutch lines. I thought pure copper brake lines were not recommended and illegal in some states because of work hardening issues. Is this a special alloy made for brakes?

Hi John I just installed a set of brake lines just like those on the BT7 I am restoring, they are a copper nickel alloy and come coiled up. The worst thing is getting them straightened out to install them. Skip
 
Harold: stunning work. A question: in picture #4 "preparing the car to run/drive", where did you get the bezel bulkhead flange? (where the cold air duct enters the cockpit. Did you cut down a bulkhead flange,fresh air? Haven't seen the part in any catalogue. Mine is missing.
 
Looks like the Moss brake line kit. They do come coiled up and I dont know about you Skip but it took me two days to install even with the old ones as a template. Mine do follow the path of frame clips. The rear ones to the brake drum cylinders were tough to get the first bend. Even the originals looked very close to the leaf springs. In many cases I alternated between a tubing bender tool and bend by hand. I did this job with everything else installed in the car except the front end and transmission last month. As you know mine is a rolling restoration.

I have a few of those on hand. Not sure if Moss has them, but I would sell one for $30 plus shipping. I'll sandblast it and paint it black to make it look good if you like.

Thanks for the info Skip and Tracy. I purchase a line set from Doug Reid <MrFinespanner@prodigy.net>last year. It was twice the cost of the Moss kit (brake and clutch lines) but all prebent and to the original spec material, finish, fittings etc. I have not installed them yet but they match up to my originals. Anyway, just another source for those looking for an easier install or concours result.

The seat rails are new from moss.

Now the fun begins.
 
Car now runs and drives so the next step is getting the body panels mounted and then painting. Panels have already been painted on the underside. My painter is on vacation for the next few weeks so it will be about 1-2 months until any more progress is made.
Here is a picture of how the car is now as well as a picture of the blower I just mounted.

Great photos of the front end. I am at the same stage of rebuilding my Healey in that my frame is sand blasted, repaired and painted. I have finished the rear end and now disassembling the front end. I have read that the front shocks were not originally painted. You did not paint the arms connecting the shocks to the front hub. Is that correct originally or more convenient?

After my vacation and the painter's vacation, we finally have some progress. Car is currently in the middle of painting and sanding. Paint isn't even finished yet and it looks beautiful already.
