BJ8 rear boot floor replacement.

The floor of my BJ8 project is just about gone. Is there a discussion of how the floor is put together especially the attachment to the aluminum rear end and the steel boot sections that attach to the floor? Thanks for your help!

Hi John,

Replacement panels are avail. for the boot floor. Look for the ones made by Kilmartin for the best fit. The floor is welded in place and attaches along the rear edge of the aluminum shroud with solid aluminum rivets. Not sure if you can replace the floor with the rear shroud in place .. might be doable but probably much harder to work around the shroud. I have some pictures on my website that show the area without the shroud and some info on the riveting.

John,
Thanks! Those are great pictures and helped tremendously. My knowledge about AH's you could put into a thimble and it would rattle. I will remove all the body panels so I will be able to replace the floor panel without the shroud. Is there any way I could get a copy of your pictures on a disk so I could enlarge them. I am going to have to do some major inner panel work and they would be great. Again thanks for your help and have a great holiday!

I replaced the trunkfloor of a BJ-8 without removing the rear shroud. I experienced no problems doing it that way.

For the same car, I did floors, sills and rockers by only removing the fenders and doors (one side at a time).

That particular car was so bad, that when I got it, you could open the door and walk up to the transmission /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I do have complete photo documentation, but they're not digital or online; maybe get around to it someday...

Hi Randy, Good to hear it can be done that way. Now that I think about it more, it may in fact help to keep the shroud in place. There are the thin sheetmetal frame bits that rivet to the boot opening, and weld to the floor that would be maintained in the proper orientation during the floor replacement. I considered leaving my rear shroud on during the restoration but then decided that it would get in the way during media blasting and finishing operations. So off it came but it was a pain to get back on properly.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,
I also replaced the floor without removing the shroud. At the time, I simply didn’t have the space to store it. I had to replace pretty much everything including the crosspiece of the frame (that was scary). Having the shroud in place helped me line everything up. I did eventually remove the shroud to do some straightening and welding on it.

Where can a person find panel parts made by Kilmartin? The only suppliers of AH parts that I know is Moss and Victoria British. Thanks for your help!

John,
British Car Specialists is the primary source for Kilmartin. You can also try Classic Collectibles in Ohio for high quality parts. THey are at ahealey.com. ALso ther are other fine suppliers such as Healey Surgeons, AH Spares and Cape International in England. Good luck on the project.

Moss does carry a lot of Kilmartin sheet metal panels. However, be sure and ask them for that vendors product to be sure of what you are getting.---Fwiw---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
