BJ8 OD disengages in third

I have problems with the overdrive disengaging in third, but not fourth gear.
If i run with the overdrive on all the time, it will engage when i switch from second to third but half a second after it disengages and doesnt come on again. If I switch to fourth it goes into overdrive shortly after and stays there.

Is it an electric or mechanical issue?

There is a switch under the gearlever at the left side
It is only on when in third or fourth, with the lever to the right side.
I would check that first.

It sounds to me as if the adjustment is out on that switch and with maybe a bit of slop in the lever it goes in whilst you hold it but slips out again when let go. I'd check the switch position first.

I agree with both of the above = gear selection switch.

With "just the right amount" of wear, you can pull the lever towards you (LHD cars) when you wanted to pass someone, and it would "kick down" out of overdrive, and then you'd release the tension on the lever and it would shift back into overdrive top.

Ahh, the joys of old British cars! I don't know, do we still refer to it as having character, or just poor engineering?
