BJ8 Noise when going from reverse to forward

U joints ?
 
I would disconnect the drive shaft from the diff and try and turn the pinion flange on the diff to see if you can duplicate the noise. Doing this takes the U joints out of the equation. If you still have to noise it may be the diff thrust washers that are worn. I see this a lot on MGB's and the thrust washers can be replaced with the half shafts out of the carrier and the diff still in place,,,, but not on a Healey. You have to remove the diff.
