BJ8 MKIII Shift

Hello,
My shifter on my BJ8 MKIII just lifts out of the tranny linkage. I have owned this car for a year or so, and I have found this to be just a quirky thing to tolerate, and also an antitheft mechanism, because if you are not aware of it the shifter comes out fully in your hand, you can't change gears. So far so good, but recently it has been coming out more frequently and harder for me to keep in place. Lifting the rubber boot exposes the assembly, and clearly there are missing parts. I can see clips and springs that don't serve any purpose but are there to keep the "assembly" together. The problem is that I don't know what that assembly is supposed to look like, so I can't be sure what is missing. Anyone with close-up pictures of this area? How does the shifter stay engaged in position? Thanks in advance for your comments/info.

You are probably missing the retaining circle clip. Part 101 in the Moss catalog on the External Gearbox centershift page (pages 54-55 in my old catalogue but you should be able to find it on their web at www.mossmotors.com). If so it can be replaced by simply removing the rubber boot the shift lever goes through.

:iagree:

You are probably missing the retaining circlip. There is also alarge flat washer that fits under it

There are two circlips as shown in the moss diagram.
Look at this diagram and see which parts you're missing.

Naw the lower one is a flat washer which retains the spring Roger

He should also make SURE the 'bush' for the ball-end is in place !!

"Shifting" is NOT fun without (and NO, don't ask how I know :hammer: ) ! !

Fitting is not fun, because of the springtension.
Look for a jar lid that fits inside the neck
Put a tierap around the circlip and tighten
Use the lid to push the lot down
With some steel tube you can use the thread on the stick (knob)
Then pull the tierap

Succes, Hans
