BJ8 loses power

On a very hot Seattle day, about 90, I was stuck in some slow traffic for about 20 minutes. The car did not overheat but the temp gauge did move up a little. After getting back up to highway speed, 50-60, for a couple of minutes, the car suddenly lost power. I could continue at 50 on the level, but the car had no acceleration above that. Let up on the gas and had one backfire. I continued to drive another couple of miles with no extra power. The car backfired one more time, and the power returned to normal.
The car normally runs perfectly, idles fine, does not seem to run rich or lean.
Ideas??
 
My BJ8 will do that after sitting a while after a run on a hot day. I think it's a vapor lock somewhere, but I haven't figured out where.
 
My thought was also a vapor lock somewhere because of the heat. I guess what I didn't understand is why it started acting up after I had resumed speed but not while I was sitting in traffic. If it was a sticky carb, I think I would experience it again.

You need a lot more fuel to accelerate/run at higher speed than when sitting and idling. Could be a weak fuel pump as well--my pump is solid state, and I'm not sure but think maybe my vapor locking started about the time I installed the SS pump. Could be the electronic components struggle under high temperatures.
