BJ8 Dash Pad

A few questions here about the dash top on a BJ8. Archives of little help here.
Mine was recovered in the wrong material when car was restored and is separating at the demister vents so time for a replacing.
First, what is the best way to remove the dash pad? I know that the toneau studs and rear view mirror screws hold it down but have heard of some magical tabs on each end I cannot locate!
Second, on the subject of replace or recover,I have seen a few replacements(board,pad and material all done) on E-bay and also Moss sells one. Anybody have any luck with these fitting correctly?
Would it just be better to take it all to a shop and have my original recovered? What was the original material called?

The toneau fasteners don't hold down the pad. Here is a photo from a previous thread that shows the tabs. Just to the left of the tab, you'll see a tee-nut. That is what the toneau fastener screws into.

You'll have to make the call on whether you redo or replace once you see what the plywood looks like. I can't comment on the ones for sale, I made my own from scratch.
 
Hi Scot. You can forget the E-Bay sellers unless you found a near perfect original one off a car. There is another consideration here. If you want the top door rolls and the dash material to match then you may be reqired to buy new or have Your existing items recovered, as Greg says: if in good shape.--Fwiw--Keoke
 
Do you mean these repros from England on E-bay don't fit or are just of low quality?
Any sources of where to get the correct vinyl material for a recover? I believe the plywood underneath is in pretty good shape.
 
I'm sure Heritage will have the correct material. I went to a fabric store and bought some marine grade vinyl in a matte black which looks pretty sweet.

Well let me put it this way. The only remaining avenue for this seller to contact Healey enthusiasts is E-Bay,
and of course all that glitters is not Gold.

The type and pattern of that covering is unique it differs from all of the other materials used in the cars.

I just installed my dash pad last Friday on my BJ8. I made it myself using what was left of my old one as a pattern and the info from this BBS. It took quite a bit of shaping to finally get it to fit properly. I thought about buying one already made but I couldn't imagine it fitting properly. I purchased the Moss interior pannel kit and it had the material to recover the dash pad. Not that difficult to do, it just takes time and patience. Have a good day!

Recovering seems the way to go after getting the correct material. Thanks for the help guys!
