BJ8 Column Ignition

Greetings,

I am new to the forum. I own a 1966 BJ8 that has a steering column mounted ignition switch that locks the steering column. I've owned the car since 1976 and have always been curious about the background on this. Was it an option?

I believe that indicates a car delivered to Germany (or perhaps somewhere else on the continent where a locking steering feature was a legal requirement). A friend owns a BJ7 with such a switch/column, so as early as 1963 it was apparently a requirement there.

Fatdog, My 1963 BJ7 has the column lock ignition switch and it was originally delivered in Germany. Marv, I'll look for a picture as well.

This is the only pic I have of the SW:

Duane,
Thanks for the great photos and diagrams. It saved me from having to get in and under my car.
