BJ8 Choke Cable Knob

I have triple Weber carbs on my BJ8 so I need a longer than normal choke cable. However, I want to keep the original choke knob for an authentic looking dash.

Has anyone successfully removed that knob from the cable so that it can be used with a different cable? If so, how did you do it? It seems to be permanently bonded. Any clever tricks that worked?
