BJ8 Choke Cable Installation

Greetings! Been quite a while since I visited this forum. Just too many other things getting in the way and more focus on restoring a '69 Dodge Charger (original owner) for 2-1/2 years.
I pulled the choke knob in my BJ8 to start the car and the cable (original, as far as I know and I've owned the car since 1984) broke at the splitter bracket on the firewall. I bought a new cable from Moss and received it, but there is a slight difference from the original: the threaded portion at the knob is shorter. I'm not sure I can get the nut on it tight, but my immediate problem/question is this:
Is there a simpler way to install the inner wire through the firewall than dropping the heater box? I've removed the console but it still doesn't provide much of a shot to the firewall hole.

Thanks!

Haven't tried this, but would it be possibly to fish a line in from the engine side of the scuttle using, say, a straightened--or appropriately bent--clothes hanger?
