BJ8 Carbs on BN7

I ended up with a pair of HD8 carbs that I'd like to put on my BN7 (when I'm done with the restoration. Do I need to get an intake manifold to match the larger carbs, or can I use the manifold that I have for the original carbs?

Hi Joe,
You <span style="font-style: italic">could</span> use your original manifold, but you'd have to modify it and there's no going back. It would be safer and cheaper in the long run to get a BJ8 manifold. If your happy with the change, then you can sell your old manifold to recoup the cost. Just one opinion. :wink:
 
Thanks Greg, I suspected that a matching manifold would be the best choice. Any ideas on where to find one?

I picked them up several years ago without thinking about the manifold. I may be able to track down the sellers name. Otherwise it's time to call the used parts guys.
 
If you don't see anything on Ebay or maybe Craigslist, I'd check with British Car Specialists. Bill Bolton may have what you need, I know he specializes in Tri-carbs though.
 
Check with Dave Russ at British Motor Sports in Campbell, California. He sell new and used parts.

Hello JJS,

I opened out the original manifold when I did mine to suit the HD8's.

At the same time I matched the manifold ports to the gasket on the head.

Hi JJS,

I gotta chime in here and say that enlarging the manifold for HD8s is much easier than you may think. The bolts are in the same position so all you have to do is open up the hole. Spray some marking blue on the manifold face and set a 2" gasket on and scribe the inside of the gasket, then grind/sand out to the line. If you screw it up, don't worry because the 1 3/4" manifolds are cheap on ebay. This way you can retain all your stock throttle linkages - if you change manifolds, you will have to have BJ7/BJ8 throttle linkages and IMHO that's a lot more work than opening up the manifold...(oh and don't forget you have to enlarge the holes in the heat shield too)
