BJ7 Starter part number

Hello Johnny; A review of a BMC Fast Moving Parts catalogue[1965], Lucas Fast Moving Parts catalogue [1973]; and Lucas 400 Master catalogues comes up with the following cross reference part numbers.

Model___________BMC___________Lucas________Serviced By:

BN1/2/6/7_______3H1281________25521________25612

BN4/BT7/BJ7/8___13H837________25578________25611

Regarding model interpretations, the symbols making up the model indicate the characteristics of each motor, i.e. M35G -- Starting Motor, 3 1/2" diameter yoke, die-cast commutator end bracket or frame.

Prefix
M____Starting Motor
35___3.5" diameter yoke
325__3.25" diameter yoke
418__4.125" diameter yoke
45___4.5" diameter yoke

Suffix
G____Die-cast commutator end bracket or frame
G-1__Die-cast commutator end bracket or frame, 4-brush
L____Long type starter

Within the types there are inboard, outboard, self-index, and Pre-engaged. The type you are concerned with is inboard.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Well Scott that certainly does help, also it coincides with Moss catalog numbers. So, If I understand correctly, they should be date stamped.

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but now maybe someone can explain what Lucas means when they say model M418G starter "Eclipse Drive", "S Drive" and "Roller Clutch Drive"? It's not that important, but interesting. All this valuable information was found in the Lucas Service British Car replacement Parts 1965-1976. It's interesting in that it shows all the Lucas parts for a given automobile.
