BJ7 and Pertronix distributor

I just received a new Pertronix distributor and happily ran out to the garage with the box under my arm. However when I took it out of the box I realized that the ends of the distributor shafts were different. My original 25D has gear on the shaft and a slot on the end. The Pertronix doesn't have the gear and has a tabbed/keyed end. I believe the gear is for the tachometer. While I wait for the vendor to get back to me, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Pertronix distributor in a Healey?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve no experience with the Dizzy . But lots of it using the conversion kits for the original Lucas Dizzy. The gear certainly is for the Tach and the off set tab is for the connection to the cam drive. The vendor probably just sent the wrong item lets hope so.Fwiw--Keoke

When I got my Mallory, it was a "generic" model. I.E. it would fit the Healey and at least one Jag model. The shaft at the bottom was left empty and the end user needed to put whatever drive dog or gear on himself. Looking at Pertronix' website, I don't see them breakdown applications beyond "British 6 cylinder" Check your instructions, I bet you'll have to pull the pin out to remove the drive dog and replace it with the one on your old dizzy.

Whats a Dizzy?

Hello dvu101, that's something that comes from being on this forum for some time especially if you have anything to do with Miss Lizzy.

Honest I do not know why these folks go off topic so. This Bloke dvu101 ask a simple question about a british car part properly called a "Dizzy" in Brit speak, but the Yanks keep calling them Distributors. Yes and if you just kept going round in circles like they do you would get DIZZY too. Now get on with it the lot of you--Keoke-AZ- :cowboy:

Steve -

I've installed two Pertronix Distributors on two of my British cars.

All Lucas distributors used the same diameter shaft at the bottom. The Pertronix Distributor uses this same sized shaft. As a courtesy, Pertonix puts on the standard offset "drive dog" on their distributor, which most British cars used in the 1960s and 1970s.

Earlier cars of several types, didn't have the drive dog on it, but the shaft is the same diameter. This means you can remove the drive dog and install your tach driving gear on the Pertronix shaft after you remove the drive dog. You may have to drill a new hole in the distributor shaft to fit the gear, but it will work.

On my A90, which uses a 1 ft long distributor drive gear, I just took off the drive dog, drilled a hole in the shaft, then put on the drive gear and pinned it together. Works like a champ.

Luckily for my '59 Jag Mk IX, the distributor dropped right in, dog and all!

Good Luck,

Alan

Gentlemen - thank you for your help. I swapped the drive dogs and my new distributor slide right in. Of course now I find that my new Cobalt ignition wires are not long enough. Oh well, at least I am moving forward.

Thanks again,

Steve

Where is the slot in the cam drive gear when you are on time and rotor pointing to #1 10 to 4 or 20 to 2--Like hands on the clock????
