BJ-8 SU Fuel Pump Replacement

Hi, guys,

Based on recommendations received on an earlier post I have purchased an electronic SU fuel pump. Now I have to actually replace the old unit. What is the easiest, most efficient procedure to do this chore? I recall someone telling me to remove the rear seat insert for easier access to the pump. So, I would appreciate your inputs on this. Thank you!

Yes, much easier to do it from the top by removing the rear seat pan. You will have to remove the tire and put jackstands under the axle to get off the seat pan from below on a BJ8.

Thank you very much! I have quite a few little "chores" to do on the car such as an oil change, grease job, etc. so I will be putting it on jack stands anyway so that should be done all at the same time. Thanks, Steve

Removing the rear seat is not necessary, in my opinion, and only adds access work and potential issues. By raising the rear right side and removing the wheel, the pump is directly in front of you with all its electrical connections and fuel lines.

Your rear seats are secured with screw nuts under the area and, because of being open to road debris and moisture, are often rusted in place. Removing the seats can open you to additional work and the risks associated with removing these parts. You will not be wasting any time by raising the car and removing the wheel to view the site and evaluate the task ahead … even if you decide to go to the point of removing the seat pan.
